social networking

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

i pretty much burnt out on the whole social networking thing when i was in fidonet.

i had a myspace page for about 5 minutes.

like everyone else i have a facebook page, but only because the people at work guilted me into it. i didn’t use it much because the interface was pretty much unusable… ‘course now that it IS usable i don’t go on it much. usually only when someone contacts me.

for years i’ve been trying to find friends i hung out with. used google mostly, but since i’ve had my facebook page a good number of people have found ME.

just today a friend i’ve been trying to contact for ages found my facebook page. so if facebook disappeared tomorrow it’s served it’s purpose.

i realized a while back that not everyone posted in newsgroups, or web based forums so anybody i know who just surfs casually probably hasn’t ever entered their name on a web page… google needs something to work with.

there’s still two people i’m trying to contat (dave, keith, jackie, from shilo, if you’re out there…)

abandonware

one of the things that really annoys me with authors who abandon their software is leaving in in limbo.

this used to be a big problem in fidonet (can you say bluewave? i knew you could. not only was the software abandoned, but anybody releated to it’s development vanished.) but it’s extended to the internet age.

just recently i got a an update notice for visualhub (no link as the site is likely to disappear) that said development was going to stop. but the author did two things that would have me register his next application should he write another one. one, explained how to back up the current version you were running, and two, he opensourced in on sourceforge.

i have two programs “out there”. (“tkblog” and “galactic empire builder”) neither has been abandoned, but they haven’t gotten updates in ages either.

tkblog was tcl/tk based and even though you can run it on max os x, if you ask me it’s not worth the effort. i don’t use it on my mac, marsedit suits my needs perfectly.

galactic empire builder was written for for/on a palm IIIe device, i have a few problems with running it on my tungsten, but haven’t had the time to debug them fully. i have the latest version of the development software, but it runs on windows and i have’t installed in on my xp vm.

i’m in the process of porting it the mac anyway. :)

notescraps

Sunday, October 5th, 2008

a few weeks ago i was offered a free version of a sticky note type program called notescraps if i would review it and put a link to it on my website.

i’ve “reviewed” similar programs in the past and thought who knows, i might switch programs if it works really well for me.

so i went to the website and realized it was windows only. so no go. to paraphrase david st. hubbins, “i shant be using windows again”.

and while i can’t review the program i can see that right off it doesn’t do what notezilla does. that being the ability to attach a sticky note to any window, so that when you fire up that program again, the sticky note is still attached to that window.

now that i’ve found a onenote replacement (notebook the only program i really miss on the mac is notezilla.

yeah, i’ll get the inevitable recommendations for evernote, which i use anyway, but that fills a different gap than one a sticky note program does. and mac’s builtin sticky note program is ok, but it’s not notezilla…
